Popular Wisdoms and Their Opposites

Why?

Get the whole picture before deciding to act on these.

How?

Publish popular wisdom and their opposites, both sides preferably also backed by research and science. The main objective is to give the reader a more complete picture, so they don’t decide just based on something that just “feels” right, without checking.

Allow Younger Children to Use Email and Other Messaging Systems While Teaching Them Smart Practices

Why?

Today, most children already want to have an email account (or other messaging systems) before the providers allow them to (before they turn 13.) A method that allows them to start doing so at younger ages and also teaches them best practices might help.

How?

The current system could be augmented with an option for younger kids, where every message first goes through their parent or guardian. At a younger age, the filtering by a parent would probably be less of a problem than when they are teenagers, especially if the service provider mandates it for younger ages. The parent could then see how the child is using the messaging system, block a message if it’s a problematic one, or let it be delivered if it’s ok. Then talk to the child to explain what was wrong with it, so they can learn how to use the system well and what to beware of.

Easier Automatic Pool Cleaning

Why?

Instead of using a net and going after the leaves and similar things that get in the pool.

How?

A mechanical system that spreads a fine mesh on the bottom of the pool. Starting on one side this net stretches on the bottom of the pool, as close to the floor as possible, and stirs up the debris that is there. When the net reaches the other side, after a short waiting period, it is pulled back at a slightly higher elevation, the furthest end being pulled in first, trapping the debris on the way back and pulling it into a disposal container built into the system, behind the wall where it’s installed.

Make Swimming Pools More Safe

Why?

Private and small swimming pools are unattended many times, and that can be dangerous especially for little children.

How?

When sensors indicate that the pool has not been used for a while, a net is automatically stretched across it so that anyone who might trip into it will be suspended unharmed above the water.
